In the last few years, Apple has transitioned most of its mobile devices to models without a home button. In doing so, it has transferred a number of Home Button functions to the Side Button on iPhone and the Top Button on iPad.

One of these shifts is the ability to shut down the device, a task most users probably do rarely anyway. So, perhaps hiding the function is unsurprising.

The old method was to hold the Side/Top Button for a couple seconds to reveal a prompt to power off. Instead, these modern products invoke Siri when you hold the button.

So, how do you shut down anyway?

Option 1: Hold Two Buttons

One way to reveal the Power Off slider is to hold the Side/Top Button together with either the Volume Up or Volume Down button. After about 1.5 seconds, the slider appears and you can use it.

On iPhone, this panel also offers sliders for Medical ID and Emergency SOS. If you haven’t set up your Medical ID, I encourage you to review my post from two years ago.

Option 2: Button Sequence

If holding two buttons together is difficult, another approach is to press them in sequence. In quick succession, you can press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, and then hold the Side/Top Button for one second to reveal the Power Off slider.

This method is also the first portion of force restarting the device, wherein you continue holding the latter button until the Apple appears on the screen.

Option 3: Head to Settings

If pushing buttons in specific combinations and/or sequences isn’t your cup of tea, you can also open Settings > General, scroll down to the bottom and tap Shut Down, and then use the same familiar slider to power off your device.

However you approach it, initiating the prompt to shut down your device will disable Face ID until you reenter your passcode. While powering off may be an infrequent affair, the option to do so remains available for whatever purposes you have in practice.
