Many digital channels are insecure, so I discourage you from sharing passwords and other sensitive information via email or SMS.

iMessage and some other texting apps are encrypted end-to-end and therefore safe for this sharing activity. However, it may be inconvenient to copy and paste a bunch of separate details into a message.

Instead, 1Password subscribers can use this alternative that is a little more secure, especially when sharing through an encrypted channel. Recipients don’t even need a 1Password account.

Share a Private Link

In 1Password, visit an item you want to share. On macOS, click the Share button and then choose Share. On iOS, just tap Share at the bottom of the record.

On the next screen, choose when the link expires and who has access. You can share with anyone who has the link or pick specific people who will need to confirm their email addresses. You can also specify if access is limited to one time per person.

When you tap Get a Link to Share, the resulting page provides a link you can share from inside the app or copy and paste elsewhere.

View Shared Items

Your recipient can visit the link you share with them, verify their email address if necessary, and immediately see and copy any details they like.

Manage Shared Items

In your account at 1Password.com, you can visit the specific item you shared and click View Sharing History to see the status of sharing the item and/or expire any individual share(s).

It’s not currently possible to see a unified list of all actively shared items nor to manage sharing on native device applications. If you want any of this advancement, send feedback to 1Password.

Consider that since email isn’t entirely secure, if someone’s account is hacked and the hacker knows their email address, they can verify it to gain access to your shared items. Therefore, I still recommend using a secure messaging channel to share the link.
