There are several approaches to finding and organizing apps on iPhone and iPad. Some users prefer all apps to be plainly visible and recognizable by icon. Others obsessively organize their apps in folders to consolidate space overall.

iOS 14 (on iPhone) offers an App Library where apps can be organized automatically in categories and optionally hidden from one’s primary home screens. [Update: As if iOS 15, iPad also has App Library.]

Whichever approach you choose, how do you move apps from one place to another?

Enter Jiggly Mode

Long press on any app until app icons start jiggling. In iOS 13 and later, a contextual “Quick Action” menu will appear along the way, where you can alternatively tap Edit Home Screen.

Once in Jiggly Mode, you can drag apps around to rearrange them, drag an app atop another to create a folder, or drag an app to the edge of the screen to move it to another home screen.

Swipe to Move Screens

An alternative to dragging an app to other screens is to instead drag the screens out from under the app.

That is, in Jiggly Mode, pick up an app. Then, use another finger to swipe the home screen left or right until you reach the screen where you want the app. Place the app in that spot and let go.

Likewise, if you want to move an app into a folder, you can tap the folder to open it during the drag or tap outside the folder to close it.

Move Multiple Apps

Did you know you can move multiple apps at once? After picking up one app, you can tap additional apps to add them to a stack atop the first one. (The first time you do this, you might need to double-tap the second app. Subsequently, a single tap should do the trick.)

Then, drag the whole group (or swipe the screen, as described above) and drop them all on another home screen.

Exit Jiggly Mode

Done reorganizing your apps? If your device has a Home button, you can press it to exit Jiggly Mode. Otherwise, tap Done in the top right. [Update: More recently, you can tap anywhere on the screen to exit Jiggly Mode.]

What clever ways have you discovered to organize your apps? Do you group or categorize them? Or do you just use Search or Siri to open the app you want?
