From Coast
to Coast
In summer 2022, following in my mom’s pedal rotations and fulfilling a lifelong goal to ride my bike across the United States, I completed the epic TransAm Westward tour offered by Adventure Cycling. Mom did this same self-contained, guided tour with the same organization in 1976 when, in its infancy, it was Bikecentennial.
The ride began May 5 in Williamsburg, Virginia, and concluded August 5 in Eugene, Oregon. I began the journey as one among 14 cyclists, following the TransAmerica Trail from the Atlantic Coast in Yorktown, Virginia. Faced with physical, social, and emotional challenges as well as those in the realms of leadership, distance, and weather, seven of us completed the trip together when we reached the Pacific Coast in Waldport, Oregon.
